Junji Ito Crimson Anime Announced With Theme Song by Yumi Matsutōya (Updated)

A panel at the Japan Expo 2025 event in Paris, France on Thursday announced that a new anime based on horror manga artist Junji Ito's various stories titled Junji Ito Crimson is in the works. Singer Yumi Matsutōya will perform the new anime's theme song "Karasu Ageha." A music video of the theme song was also released, featuring illustrations by Ito. Update: Crunchyroll confirmed the anime will stream on its service.The music video's main character called the Karasu Ageha plays the role of connecting the underworld and the present world. The song will be included in Matsutōya upcoming 40th original album that will release this fall.The Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre anime debuted worldwide on Netflix in January 2023. The anime included 20 stories from Ito's body of work that were animated "for the first time."The 2018 Junji Ito "Collection" anime adapted some stories from the Itō Junji Kessaku-shū (Junji Ito Masterpiece Collection) and Fragments of Horror manga. The anime included an adaptation of Ito's Tomie story on its second and third DVD sets.Ito's Uzumaki manga inspired a separate four-episode mini-series anime adaptation. The anime was originally slated to debut on Toonami in 2020 before it premiered in Japan, but the anime was delayed several times, and eventually premiered in September 2024. Netflix streams the series. Ito's Uzumaki and Tomie manga have inspired live-action adaptations, and his GYO manga inspired an original video anime project. Viz Media has published these three manga titles, as well as Ito's Fragments of Horror, Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection, and Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection in English.
